Merry Christmas Eve and my Top Six Ways To Spread Holiday Cheer

- Guest Post by Robin Bielman

Merry Christmas Eve! I’m so happy to be here at Books are Magic to celebrate this joyous time of year with you! Thanks so much, Vidya, for having me as part of your Magical Christmas with MORE Books event!

During the holidays, I love to give. It makes me happy. It makes me feel good. It puts a smile on my face when I see a smile on my givee’s face. :D And it’s especially rewarding when the recipient doesn’t see it coming! I love catching people by surprise and so each holiday season my family and I love to do some random acts of kindness, or RAK Attacks, as we like to call them. So on this Twas The Night Before Christmas (one of my all-time favorite Christmas books!), I thought I’d share some fun things to do to bring cheer to someone you know—or maybe even someone you don’t.

·         Deliver “Snowman Soup” (a packet of hot cocoa, marshmallows and a candy cane) to someone with a note that says…

Snowman Soup
Was told you’ve been real good this year.
Always glad to hear it!
With freezing weather drawing near,
You’ll need to warm the spirit.
So here’s a little Snowman Soup
Complete with stirring stick.
Add hot water, sip it slow.
It’s sure to do the trick!

·         Text or email someone a Christmas joke. Here’s a couple of my favorites:

What’s Santa’s favorite sandwich?
Peanut butter and jolly

Why is Rudolph seen at the public library a lot?
Because he’s very well-red

·         Spread some Kissmas joy with Hershey’s kisses. There are lots of recipes that include these yummy morsels, or simply bag them up in a clear bag and tie with holiday ribbon.

·         Fill one of those giant oversized Christmas bags with gloves, scarves and old jackets (you can collect these from family and friends). Tie with a ribbon and deliver to a homeless shelter.

·         Plant a poinsettia. Surprise a neighbor by finding a spot in their front yard to add this traditional holiday flower. Use sidewalk chalk to leave them a message—or you can keep it a secret. Secret Santa often strikes, you know.

·         And because reading is one of my most favorite things to do, I love going to Barnes & Noble and picking up a new holiday book each year. My boys are getting older, but they’ll indulge me a little family story time because they know I enjoy reading  with them still. Plus, B&N gives books to charity every year and at check out you can choose one to purchase and donate. Easy peasy. And it makes me so happy to think a child will get a new book.

The book Shane, my hero from HER ACCIDENTAL BOYFRIEND, just picked up for my heroine, Kagan? HER SEXIEST MISTAKE, by Jill Shalvis. See, Kagan lets this tiny lie slip and well, the rest is history. J

I hope all your wishes come true this holiday season!  Oh, and I almost forgot. Leave me a comment and you’ll be entered to win a copy of KISSING THE MAID OF HONOR, the first book in my Secret Wishes series, and YOURS AT MIDNIGHT, my New Year’s Eve novella. Both are eBooks, and wherever you are in this great big world, you’re eligible to win.

  1. Loved the ideas for spreading some Christmas cheer. And I got a kick out of the Christmas joke. Wish we had an actual bookstore close -- I get my print books from Wal-Mart mostly, altho I have ordered some from Amazon. Occasionally when we're visiting our daughter and family in OKC, I get to go to a B&N, but haven't been for a while. Granddaughter likes book stores, too, but so many brick & mortar stores are closing -- such a shame.
    Merry Christmas, Robin.
And Merry Christmas, Books Are Magic.
